Range: Micro review
My father used to pride himself on being “A jack of all trades and master of some”. That definitely rubbed off on me and led to my dabbling in many other fields other than my own (which I feel has been invaluable in my life).
So when David Epstein talks about the benefits of being a generalist Vs specialist in his book “Range”, that completely resonated with me !!! Through various examples and case studies (ranging from competitive golf to writing comics), David proposes that a range of experiences is much better than over specialization in an area. I really liked the book since many of his recommendations or findings aligned with my thought processses around rounding out our skills with varying perspectives and experiences.
David also explains the differences between shallow learning and deep learning and how critical thinking is a key skillset to advance in today’s careers. Being in technology field, I find that this is more relevant than ever. With the fast changing technology landscape, I see that engineers who focus on wide ranging foundational skillset/experiences are the ones who will advance rather than ones specializing in a particular tool/technology.
Many more interesting nuggets… Recommended read.
