The fearless organization: Micro Review
In her book, The fearless organization, Amy C. Edmondson brings to you her research, recent case studies and her perspective on how to make psychological safety a reality in your own team.
Amy makes a credible case that lack of psychological safety could be one of the primary reasons for many of the recent high profile cases of moral / ethical failures by companies like Volkswagen, Wells Fargo, Uber etc.
At the same time, she brings up examples of companies like Pixar, Eileen Fisher, Bridgewater Associates, Google X which are doing very well due to deliberately creating a workplace that promotes psychological safety.
It’s going to be a landmark book on the topic in the sense that it finally provides the research and empirical data to show that psychological safety is an important ingredient in a high performing organization.
The book also proposes a roadmap on how to create psychological safety in your own organizations.
I still do think that weaving psychological safety in to the fabric of the organization which includes its HR processes and formal incentive structures needs more thought leadership and is still a gap. Having a compelling perspective on that will help drive adoption.
A recommended read for all leaders.
